I want to glue ceramic tiles to the outside a terra cotta planter to be used as a fish tank. Any suggestions?
I'm turning a terra cotta pot into a fish tank. I've made small tiles myself and want to glue them to the outside of the pot (mosaic). What I need to know is: what kind of adhesive can I use to keep the fish save and stops water from seeping out?
While this sounds like a nice project, I'd be a little concerned about what size planter are you planning to use. Even small fish like a betta or small group of guppies should be allowed 2.5-5 gallons of water volume. Many fish will also require heated water, and most a filter in order to thrive.
Also, most tropical fish aren't meant to be viewed from above - you may not get a good view of their coloration or finnage. For species bred to be viewed from the top (goldfish and koi), these would quickly outgrow any planter (fancy goldfish get to around 5-8 inches minimum, common types up to 18 inches; koi get to around 3 feet).
Perhaps a better method of doing the mosaic for a fish is to get a 5.5 or 10 gallon glass aquarium (about $10-12) and put the mosaic on the back of the tank (on the outside, since ceramic glazes may contain chemicals that would harm the fish). This could be done with clear aquarium sealant, although I's also add another backing behind the tiles for support.
If you want to use the pot, this would only be good as a temporary home, with heat and filtering concerns as stated above, plus growth of fish beyond the capacity of most planters, but also because the smaller volume will be relatively unstable as far as temperature (particularly if you plan to have it outside).
