Question about tomato plants?
I recently bought a few tomato plants and have a few questions about them. The first is I got 4 roma plants, they are all very small and I planted them in a very large planter and once they start growing im going to transplant them into bigger pots, I was wondering though why many of the lower leaves are turning yellow and crunchy. I water them with about half a gallon of miracle grow water every other day. They were planted in soil that is made specifically for growing vegetables. Also I bought a hanging cherry tomato plant. It is thriving pretty well right now and it had I would say 40 blooms and about 20 tomatos already growing. It gets the same water treatment as the romas. I was wondering though if I should take it out of the basket and put it in a larger pot and stake it up or just let it do its thing. Thanks for all the help.
Leave the small ones to hang, they'll be wonderful. The bottom leaves often turn. They should be removed and put in trash not compost just in case they carry a tomato disease. Removing the bottom growth encourages fruiting higher up. Leaves and branches low down can touch soil and permit disease to climb up. Always remove lower leaves and branches. The deeper you plant them, the more roots they grow and the plant will be healthier and produce maximum fruit.
Water from below not wetting leaves. Tomatoes split if water supply is irregular. One inch per week unless very hot days, then twice a week.
